Strong Educational Institutions

Champaign-Urbana is one of the smartest places on Earth, the kind of place where you’ve probably overheard a world-altering theoretical breakthrough while enjoying your morning coffee or riding an MTD bus. Our university climbs ranking lists every year, our research community is thriving and our children are trained to be the bright leaders of the future.

Champaign-Urbana’s University of Illinois Laboratory High School is a top-ranked public high school. The University of Illinois engineering program is world-renowned. The University of Illinois is also ranked as a top 5 engineering school, with more undergraduate students than the other top 4 combined. On the opposite end of the spectrum, our older residents benefit from lifelong learning at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Guest lectures and public opportunities to engage with the university are plentiful.

And local community college Parkland College serves more than 20,000 students each year, providing more than 100 degree and certificate programs of study that include many advanced technology programs such as 3D software development, computer science and engineering. Each year, more than 2,000 students transfer from Parkland to the University of Illinois — making it a smart way to get a jumpstart on education.

Our alumni credentials don’t lie. University of Illinois graduates have gone on to lead companies like Tesla Motors (Martin Eberhard), YouTube (Steve Chen and Jawed Karim), Oracle (Larry Ellison and Bob Miner), what’s now known as Lotus Notes (Ray Ozzie), Yelp (Jeremy Stoppelman and Russel Simmons), Safari (Dave Hyatt), Firefox (Dave Hyatt and Joe Hewitt), GE (Jack Welch) and Delta Air Lines (C. E. Woolman). And because the world knows we’ve got the brains, our campus commonly hosts recruiters from Fortune 100 companies throughout the nation — and it was named by the Wall Street Journal as the top place to recruit talent. Not to mention the 18 corporate innovation centers located at the University of Illinois Research Park.

Champaign-Urbana seems to attract only the best.
